Understanding Light
The light all around us is made up of the light that we can actually see (all the colours of the rainbow) and invisible light that we cannot see (Ultraviolet and Infrared light) that is harmful not only to our skin but also to our eyes.


What Is Blue Light?
Blue light can now be found all around us. Blue light is the wavelength between 390-500nm, and sources of blue light include the sun, digital screens (TVs, computers, laptops, smart phones and tablets), electronic devices, and fluorescent and LED lighting.
The indoor (man-made) lighting is classed as Blue-Violet and is in the range of 400-450nm. This category of blue light (and the range 400-420nm) is what is of concern as it has been linked to many eye related issues.

With advancements in digital screen technology, many of today’s electronic devices use LED back-light technology to help enhance screen brightness and clarity. These LEDs emit strong blue light waves in the danger range.

There is a growing concern about this excessive blue light exposure from these devices because of their wide-spread use, increasing popularity, the range of wavelength that they emit, as well as the proximity of these devices to our eyes, which makes the degree of exposure even greater.

Blue Light… Understanding The Good And The Bad.
All blue light isn’t all bad and some parts of the blue light spectrum does have some beneficial effects. The blue light that comes from the sun for instance is needed to regulate our internal biological clock and maintains a normal circadian rhythm allowing us to get a good night sleep. Blue light exposure during the day keeps our brain functioning well, keeps us alert and active and helps us maintain a positive attitude.

At night-time (when there is no sun), the human body is supposed to then switch gears and begin relaxing/winding down and then get a good night’s sleep.
In this highly technological world that we now live in, this isn’t happening due to the prolonged exposure in the evening/night to various devices that emit harmful blue light.

Digital devices like laptops, desktops, tablets, smartphones, televisions and even the fluorescent and LED lighting that is abundant in our homes/offices etc are all emitting the potentially harmful blue -violet light which negatively impacts our visual system, sleep patterns and health in general.

How Does Harmful Blue Light Affect Us?
The natural defences of the human eye are not equipped to protect from harmful blue light. Blue light with its shorter wavelength and higher energy can penetrate the front structures of the eye (cornea and crystalline lens) and reaches deeper into your eye to the light sensitive retina.

Prolonged exposure to harmful blue light can contribute to cataract and age-related macular degeneration, which can lead to loss of vision.

Additionally, because short-wavelength, high energy blue light scatters more easily than other visible light, it is not as easily focused by the eye. Thus, when looking at computer screens, smartphones and other digital devices that emit significant amounts of this harmful blue light, this unfocused visual “noise” reduces contrast and can lead to headaches, eye fatigue, loss of concentration and can even interfere with natural sleep patterns and overall general health.

While some blue light is good as discussed, prolonged exposure to high amounts of harmful blue light (wavelengths between 400-450nm and between 400-420nm in particular) that must be avoided by using proper Blue Cut filtering lenses.

Not All Blue Cut Lenses Are The Same?
Your eyes are extremely important as you would agree and as such proper attention should be placed when purchasing Blue Cut lenses to ensure that you receive lenses that are actually effective at filtering out the harmful blue light that is required.

Some lenses attempt to filter this blue light in various ways, but most are ineffective at doing so. Some lenses utilize a tint that attempts to absorb the blue light while others provide a blue coating that is said to reflect the harmful blue light.

The most effective blue cut lenses are those where the blue cut filtering technology is incorporated into the lens material itself at the time of production (monomer), so the filtering effect is throughout the entire lens which absorbs nearly 100% of the harmful blue-violet light rather than attempt to reflect it with a coating or surface tint.

Some of these lenses filter out only a fraction of the harmful blue light while others are filter out close to 100% of these harmful rays as could be demonstrated by using a blue laser passing through the lens.
