Work From Home Tips
Our world has changed drastically in the blink of an eye. Normality as we’ve known it has ceased to exist. Many companies, in response to these changes, have adjusted their structures to encourage or require their employees to work from home. However, these changes come with their own set of challenges. We have some sure-fire tips to help you navigate this stay-at-home period while the nation battles the Covid-19 pandemic.
Set up a work area.
It’s easy to not want to leave the comfort of your bed for the entire day. After all, we’ve all been potatoes while at home. However, this is not conducive to a healthy work environment. Studies show that having a set space where you work improves productivity and allows you to sign off and return to family life at the end of the day.
- You want to avoid glare as much as possible. Glare can increase eye strain, induce headaches, and tire you out faster. Avoid setting up your workspace directly in front of a window or with the window directly behind your screen.
- Opt for a well-lit room. Lighting plays a major role in our vision and can affect our eye health. Ensure that there is adequate lighting and don’t be afraid to introduce some lamps into the space if more lighting is required.
- Turn down the brightness on your devices. For those that are light sensitive, this is a proven way to ease the strain. With increased screen time, our eyes have new challenges to face. The blue light that is emitted from devices can be damaging if not dealt with properly. We recommend our Blu Guard lenses that provide the ultimate protection against harmful blue light. Set specific work hours.
You’re already in your comfortable space and you’ve gotten into the swing of things. You look up at the clock and realize that it’s already 1:00 am. You’ve worked for 18 hours straight! Where did the time go? Setting specific work hours can help. Allowing yourself time to disconnect and unwind is important for the body to rejuvenate itself. Also, we’re sure that your family would like to spend some time with you.
Remember to take breaks. If you were at work, you would have a lunch break, bathroom breaks, and finish working at a certain time. Don’t neglect your break times.
Give your eyes a break.
Those of us that use electronic devices all day long for work understand the struggles of strained eyes at 2:00 in the afternoon. Proper eye care should not be neglected at this time. Taking frequent breaks can improve eye health and productivity.
Practice looking away every few minutes. A great tip is to use the 20-20-20 rule which encourages you to shift your focus every 20 minutes to an object that is at least 20 feet away for a duration of 20 seconds. This provides a moment of rest for your eyes. Blinking often can also improve eye strain.
Hydration is key!
This stay-at-home period is a great opportunity to practice drinking more water. For people that suffer from dry eyes, increasing your water intake can help to re-hydrate your eyes and prevent irritation. It can also improve your blurred vision, double vision, and eye strain. For healthy adults, it is recommended that we drink 9-13 glasses of water each day. Is your body getting enough water?
These times won’t last forever so let’s make the best of it. Ensure that you are doing your part to help stop the spread of Covid-19. Practice proper hygiene and social distancing. Take care of your eyes and be kind to yourself. Ultimate Eyewear encourages Trinidad and Tobago to help #flattenthecurve.
